Bachelor of Social Science (Counselling)

Course Overview

The Bachelor of Social Science (Counselling) is designed to keep at its core the relationship between faith, spiritual growth and counselling.  Students will develop the understanding and skills of what it takes to be a professional counsellor with a Christian worldview.  Our faith-based community of learning promotes and values diversity and integrity, creating a dynamic and unique synergy.

The course content includes sociology, psychology, spiritual formation, basic counselling skills, counselling theories and practice, an understanding of human services and community development, a third year practical placement at a range of private, government and welfare organisations, as well as special interest electives.

Prerequisites

Mature age students (over the age of 21 at January 1st of each year) are particularly encouraged to apply as counselling is a profession where life experiences and personal development are a significant and valuable resource.  Mature age students who have not undertaken other tertiary studies will be required to sit a STAT test to demonstrate basic competencies.

Satisfactory completion of Year 12 with a TER of 60-65 in an Australian secondary school, or equivalent, except in the case of mature-age applicants. School leavers are advised that it is highly recommended that students have 2 – 3 years experience before commencing a Bachelor of Social Science (Counselling). The Faculty Head will examine exceptions to this.

Graduate Certificate in Counselling

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling offers a range of flexible options to suit individual needs for professional development in a variety of counselling areas.  The course is comprised of four subjects and is normally completed part-time over one year, or equivalent. The Graduate Certificate option is suitable for individuals in various human service and educational professions that include a counselling component.  This is a flexible program, offering multiple graduate pathways.  Each of the course options provides graduate level knowledge, understanding and skills.

Prerequisites

Applicants must have completed a bachelor-level qualification from a recognised tertiary institution approved by the Course Coordinator. For more information, please refer to the course prospectus.

Graduate Diploma in Counselling

The Graduate Diploma prepares students for a career in counselling and focuses on the development of professional and practical counselling skills.  160 hours of counselling is undertaken at Life Design Counselling and Education under the guidance of qualified and experience supervisors.  It is this practical element that makes Tabor Adelaide's Graduate Diploma in Counselling so unique.

The course is designed with an emphasis on transformational learning that equips students with the knowledge and skills required of professionals working in counselling and related human services.

Prerequisites

Applicants must have completed a bachelor-level qualification from a recognised tertiary institution approved by the Course Coordinator. For more information, please refer to the course prospectus.

Master of Counselling (Clinical or Research)

The Master of Counselling (Clinical) allows counselling graduates to extend their experience and expertise in the profession in selected areas.  The Master of Counselling (Research) allows counselling graduates to develop their research skills and knowledge in selected areas of interest.  Both Masters options build upon the Tabor Adelaide Graduate Diploma in Counselling, which constitutes the first year of the course.

Prerequisites

For entry into the Masters course, applicants would normally need to have an undergraduate degree in an area related to counselling and have completed relevant bridging work, which can be achieved through Tabor Adelaide's Graduate Certificate in Counselling.  However, if assessed as suitable by the Head of School, a person with an undergraduate degree in any area may apply and then complete the necessary bridging work.  For more information, please refer to the course prospectus.
